6 valve bypass
I'd never heard of a 6 valve by pass till last night and when I did, a friend at the table asked "how fat was the guy?"
Then I came home and saw
this. Krispy Kremes are a little bit passe now. Everyone and their dog has tried them. But I don't think anyone has tried the Krispy Kreme burger though I'm sure if this existed
in that time of yore where I was surround by kids who talked nothing about KKs, it would have been what they'd have subsisted on all those years ago in cold cold Calgary.
But from where I'm sitting, it's just a quicker where to die. Don't bother with all the lard and trans fat, just eat a couple of these and you're well on your way.

Don't Get Fatter, Give up the Batter
Only in Australia will this happen. Krispy Kreme has finally broken into Melbourne. Before this, Aussies would fly/drive from all over Australia to Sydney airport to buy the doughnuts.
Picture from The Age
And in true Aussie fashion, it opened to
great protests, by a salad bar and people dressed in Sumo suits. At the same time, there were
people queuing 2 days before the opening because the first person in the queue would win an entire year's supply of the artery clogging, fat laden, sweet sweet rings of sin.
Picture from the Herald Sun
And apparently, they were giving out free doughnuts outside the State Library in the city. What a time to be in Melbourne!

Evil Food on Maundy Thursday
We just came back from dinner at Hong Kong Cafe and had the most of desserts there. French toast. Sounds harmless until you actually see it. 2 thick slices of bread with peanut butter slathered in between, dipped in egg and deep fried to gold perfection. Served with a slab of butter quickly melting its way into the soft white bread on the inside. When you cut it open, peanut butter heated by the oil, oozes out. To top it off, you're served this with golden syrup, the sweeter cousin of maple syrup.

The thickness of this sinful delight.

Aerial view, with slab of butter melting in plain sight.
This puts
Krispy Kreme with its 12 gms of fat and 200 calories per doughnut to shame. The French toast makes Krispy Kreme something Weightwatchers would recommend as a healthy snack.

A joy on its own, but there really isn't a means of comparison when it comes to sinfulness. The french toast is in its own level of covetousness, unparralled by any other.

Food glorious food
Because it's been ages since I did one.
Because I was very upset a while ago when my Father in law asked me to list down a list of food I
actually eat because I am particular about what I eat. I know he meant well but my mind decided to take great offence.
Because a few weeks ago, I came closest to developing a temporary eating disorder because of the stress I was under.
Because I need to not fear putting on weight.

Hobbit food
I don't remember much from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy because unlike
Tym and
Packrat, I'm not a fan. I only went to see the movies because I was chalking up credits for chick flicks that I might want to see in the future. And because each movie was like 3 hours long, 1 LOtR movie was equivalent to two chick flicks. And that to me was a pretty good deal.
Anyway, what I do remember of it was the fact that the hobbits had many meals in a day. Breakfast, 2nd breakfast, Elevenses, Luncheon, Afternoon Tea, Supper supplemented with plenty of snacks in between. I remember thinking, these little people sure eat a whole lot.
On average, we eat 3 meals a day, sometimes with snacks in between. But for the last five days, the number of meals a day have increased and the portions have somewhat tripled.
On the eve of the eve of the eve of New Year, we had one
yu sheng to toss for luck
, a steamboat and
with dessert from
Menotti to follow. It was one meal, but more than I usually eat in a day.
On the eve of the eve of New Year, we had dumplings for lunch, yoghurt for snacks and a Japanese reunion dinner complete with
crocodile herbal soup and deep fried frogs' legs and a
yu sheng to toss for luck.
On the eve of the New Year, we made Dense Chocolate Cake in the day, so that was plenty of snack and steamboat again and roasted meat of beast with birds' nest to follow complete with the
yu sheng to toss for luck. Disappointed was my mother-in-law when I announced that my mother had declared a moratorium on my eating
cooling food. Apparently, the latest hypothesis is that I am too cool, not in the
hip and
happening way but in the
yin-yang, there is imbalance in me, hence I suffer from being easily chilled- my hands turn blue from bathing in cold-ish water- way.
On the first day of the New Year, we had a Peranakan lunch at my Aunt's, lunch at Packrat's parents and dinner at another Aunt's with many hunks of meat, lasagne, pasta, chicken in all forms, fried, stewed, curried, chillied and boiled in soup. Not to forget the
3 yu shengs that we tossed for luck.
On the Second day of the New Year, we had yoghurt and cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, yoghurt and chocolate for tea and a steam boat dinner with thankfully, some veg, but more meat, this time including venison
and to top it off, a barbeque dinner with rib-eye steaks, Sri Lankan Crab put on the grill and grilled
tulang. For those who are unclear of what
tulang is, it's an artery choking dish of marrow and fat. How much fat, we were blissfully unaware of until some of the
tulang caught fire because the heat had caused the fat to melt into liquid fuel. The way to eat the
tulang was to dig out the marrow and smear it onto toast, eating it with pepper and salt. It apparently tastes divine but be warned, it oozes out of your pores after and you smell of meat of cow after. And it is NOT a pleasant smell. So second dinner led straight into the evening Elevenses with remaining Krispy Kreme doughnuts. And like every other meal we've had this festive season, there was
yu sheng to toss for luck.
Today, I think we will skip lunch as we are going to another barbeque where the hostess ordered 5 kg of sirloin steak. And possibly, there will be
yu sheng to toss for luck.

Weight Gain
Tomorrow we leave. Tomorrow, we swallow
the blue pill and return to reality.
So today, there has been frantic packing.
The problem with being away for the duration before Christmas is the need to do Christmas shopping here. That in itself isn't too bad except there is no the need to bring all of that back. And the almost budget airline that we took here allows us 20kg each. No more, no less. Actually AUD$17 for every extra kilo added. What I consider extremely expensive weight gain.
It's bittersweet to have to pack and leave. As
Packrat woefully reminded me, we're headed back to small-mindedness. But I guess knowing that we have a plan makes it a little bit easier for me to endure going back. Add to that, I'm having extremely severe fishball withdrawl symptoms, that I strongly suspect I won't be able to quell till Boxing Day. The 6kg of ham we are bringing back is indication of the type of meals we're going to be eating till New Year's.
And on top of that, I think Packrat and I realised how we have outgrown student accomodation. Sleeping on a
threadbare Ikea mattress on the ground with the springs poking into your back is just not something you can deal with when the incoming new year will see you round thirty. I think being a working semi-adult has spoilt us. We can afford air-conditioning, which makes 38 degree days like this bearable. And today is cloudy. So there are reasons to go home.
So what did we do here?
Slept a lot-slept too little-ate
Krispy Kreme-walked a lot- lay long while Nguyen got hung-explain to countless people that they couldn't believe everything on the Australian media-
got picked up- was freezing and hot, all in one day out-went to the Blue Mountains- stayed in a B&B that felt like Laura Ashley designed it-had strawberries in champagne-went horseriding-saw Packrat go swimming with his horse-cried some- laughed a whole lot- discovered grilled pumpkin-discovered mosquitoes in Oz-dreamt the bizarre- visited the
Sydney Fish Market 3 days in a row- rented a 1.3 litre
Hyundai Getz and a
Holden 3.8 litre Commodore with a navigational unit-drank some wine- ate much sushi- discovered
low fat burgers and
cardiac arrest-inducing burgers-fed gulls-chased gulls-won $12 on the pokies-decided
Virginblue was the way to fly domestic-bought hot sauce that was very hot-bought hot sauce that was disappointingly not hot enough-ate cherries- craved for more cherries-went to a protest rally- petitioned to
John Howard and
Kim Beasley jointly for something (not sure what)- went to
a restuarant on its opening night and got superb service-tried to be Aussie and do a barbie but there was far too much wind and it was too cold-drank tea at
a tea shop-visited tea shop at least 8 times (for free tea)- bought a lot of tea products for Christmas present- hunt for a box to put all the tea presents to bring back- was stunned and awed by the Lion King-watched an entire movie at the cinema in a bean bag- ate chick pea burgers- saw how one could make a souvlaki in 16 seconds with the help of TNT - custom make a bag at
Crumpler - go to a Bo-ho market where people were selling Moroccan hash openly- discover
Glycemic Index count on supermarket food, 9 grain bread that could slap Bonjour * bread around a bit- learnt how to cook clams in white wine- cooked a lot of clams- watch clams breathe in water- eat swordfish- overhear a conversation where the topic of discussion was "how to smuggle drugs into SEA" and the conclusion was to put it in Ziplock bags in an airtight container so that sniffer dogs couldn't suss it out. I mean, how dumb can you get???- visit
the Shrine of Remeberance- talked a lot- held hands a lot- ate a lot of gelato- walk down the street and try
different gelato
stores-get sweaty soles because of the heat- watched
the fire show- had smoothies in the middle of the night-shopped in the middle of the night-walked in scorching sun-walked in the rain-Christmas shopped in a foreign country-scratch head about how to bring Christmas shopping home-order Kosher meal for Packrat for the flight back- was hungry all the time- was full all the time-take 2 hours to write this post-....
The list goes on. Anyway, it's too hot to go on and our friend who is flying back with us is freaking out because her luggage is 12 kg overweight and she has AUD$480 worth of abalone that she has to check in.
* Cannot find website for Bonjour bread

The mice have come out to play
W and I found out that our respective spouses were at the
Teo's till wee hours of this morning playing mahjong. This is after Dan tells me he's really tired. So, we're both feeling a tad left out of things especially when the sun rises and sets on us nagging at kids, feeding kids, holding their hands when they're anxious, forcing them to take lozenges when they cough and going around with dripping wet towels to alleviate the extremely dry air that is taking a toll on their very fragile constitutions at this point in time.
I've even had to "book" time on my own lap top because they've basically taken possession of it. I don't mind, because they're working and they're good kids, but apart from one another, we haven't really had much adult interaction. Conversation topics with the kids revolve around
1. Food- Krispy Kreme, Geese thighs, Meat, Jerky, more meat, lamenting lack of meat for our Muslim coach. Canadians have no concept of Halal or Muslim (A school principal asked him WHY he was Muslim?- In dire need of some racial/religious harmony education that we do so well at home)
2. Good looking guys and girls from other teams
3. Swarthy, dangerious men from other teams
4. Bruce Lee films (W and the guys)
and obviously
5. Debate stuff
For me, there has been no one to of shopping, exercise or in general bitch to about the numerous things that go through my head that require "bitch air time".
For Wahj, there's no one to talk to about games, war gaming, tarot cards, photographs...
So sufficed to say, both of us are looking forward to leaving here although we're still trying to prepare ourselves for the awful awful flight back to home. After that, I'm going to go on holiday.
Many out there have told me how fortunate it is to go away on government payroll. Seriously, if they wanted to, they can have this. Babysitting 24/7 is not a holiday. If not for the fact that we need to debate now, we would have lost all sense of time. Everyday, we ask one another what day it is, because weekends don't matter, neither does day and night. The division is more of sleep and work and work is very easily three quarters of the day. If only we could claim off in lieu.
But for now, the kids are flocking back in so I'm having to give up my place at the computer.

Cold Fact #3
Regardless of the amount of moisturiser you slap on your legs, a rash develops from the dry air and it gets extremely itchy!
Once again, another 5 hour sleep night. I really need to sleep more but I'm guessing it'll be unlikely seeing that the championships start tomorrow. The kids are having cup noodles and Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast. Me, I'm refraining.
It's Chinese New Year in Singapore. My parents were tempting me with piping hot steam boat and Dan was going to his parents for dinner as well. Feels weird not to be around for CNY, but then again, last year, I did get tremendously homesick because I was with Dan at his family's and there was much roasted dead carcass served.
We might do something for the kids tonight. We'll see. Mayhaps tiny red packets, since we are near a big ass Asian supermarket. Perhaps gold chocolate coins in it. Heh.
Anyway, the kids are more or less done by their make shift breakfast so it's time to start my day.
Later.

Cold Fact #2
No matter how white and fluffy the snow is, MUST NOT EAT.
This was the stern warning we sent out to our
"sua-teng"* debaters this afternoon when they had first day light contact with the snow and were amazed at its powdery form and dazzled (quite literally, tomorrow, they're not leaving the hotel without shades) by its whiteness. Quote one of them "Now, I know why Mary's lamb was
as white as snow!"
We're currently on hold with Air Canada because one of the pieces of luggage did not seem to find its way to Calgary. We think it's sitting on the tarmac in Vancouver wondering why it got left behind. Furthermore, the handle is broken, so the luggage tag might have fallen off, causing it to be even more untraceable. According to the front desk, Air Canada has a penchant for losing luggage. So, no one was actually that surprised. And talk about global outsourcing. We were joking when we said the call centre might be in India and that's why they take so long to get back to us. And lo and behold after 20 minutes on hold, a thick Indian accent said good morning to us, indicating time difference since it was 7 in the evening here.
We had a good day today. We sparred in the morning with the American team and suddenly understood how global the American accent was. Usually, when speakers start their verbal assaults, it's close to impossible to hear, let alone comprehend them. But with the Americans, no such problem, despite the fact that they were speaking at a speed that would have made me blue in the face had I tried to emulate it. Thereafter, we went for lunch at a local mall that made one of our debaters thrilled to bits. He found
Krispy Kreme there. I must admit that the 22 gm of fat makes for good eating. The donut is light and melts in your mouth, it just dissolves. Thank God I don't live here or I'd be hooked and good bye size 4. On the bright side, mayhaps I wouldn't freeze anymore. That's the consensus going around blog world, that I should eat so that I'm not so cold.
Ok, off now. Debaters are laying claim on my lap top... even though it's mine and not theirs. :)
*literally translated- top of the mountain...but has come to mean country bumpkin like..
